Centro della Toscana in provincia di Lucca, situato sul litorale della Vermiglia, prende il nome dal Forte Fattovi erigere dal Granduca Leopoldo I nel 1788 che bonificò la zona paludosa e colpita dalla malaria. Celebre località balneare, fu scoperto nell’800 da intellettuali e artisti Eeuropei, è stata per molto tempo luogo di vivaci incontri letterari tanto che oggi ospita il Festival internazionale della Satira.
